Q4: DRAFT

Audience Profiles

To choose our target audience, we decided to do some research into thriller films and whom they targeted. Our group used websites such as BBFC and IMDB to find certain thriller films and their profiling.

Our group decided that our target audience would be mainly directed towards 15-25 year olds. This is because we thought that young adults would be the most interested in our thriller opening sequence out of any age category. We also found this out through doing vox pops on different varieties of people. The reason that young adults would be the most interested is because they are looking to seek out tension, suspense and excitement, and you can gain those emotions through thriller films.

We also decided to aim our thriller towards both male and female genders. This is because there is no specific gender required to watch the opening sequence, and doesn’t discriminate specific genders. Also, the two main and only characters shown in the opening sequence are both a male and a female, which means that it is suited to both genders equally.

Our target audience should be interested in watching television programmes and films. Additionally, they take an interest to relaxing casually, and going through media websites, social networks and devices, for example; Facebook, Twitter, Netflix etc. The people who would be interested in our thriller opening sequence will also be a sociable character, meeting up with friends and going to events, socializing with a variety of people.

The demographics of people who would be interested in our project would most likely be in categories C2, D and E. This is because these groups are more suited towards younger audiences and means that these types of people are more interested in relaxing freely, watching films and socializing since they have more time on their hands because they do not work all the time.

For the psychographics, the most suited groups for our opening sequence would be explorers, strugglers and aspirers. This is because the particular groups are more aimed towards young adults and students. These psychographic groups are interested in trying out new things, and since our opening sequence is of the thriller genre, they will be seeking out for the tension and darkness, which stereotypical thrillers thrive upon. Furthermore, these people are more willing to try out new brands of clothing, foods and media sources, so if they never really watch thriller films, they might want to try something different so will watch our thriller project.

Since our thriller film (the whole film, not opening sequence) might include strong violence, strong language/behavior and infrequent sight of drugs misuse, it would then be classified as a 15 by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). This means that you would have to be 15 to purchase this movie, or see it in a cinema. The BBFC regulate all films and video games in the UK, and this means that they give them an age rating which the customer buying them must be. Content, which the BBFC rate films on, includes:

  • ·      Imitable behavior
  • ·      Language
  • ·      Nudity
  • ·      Sex
  • ·      Violence
  • ·      Threats
  • ·      Drug use
  • ·      Themes
  • ·      Context
  • ·      Tone/Impact

Our thriller opening sequence doesn’t portray signs of any of these regulations though, so could be targeted towards a younger age group than the one our group decided on.
